The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India’s premier central recruiting agency responsible for appointments and examinations for All India services and group A & B of Central services. It conducts various examinations such as the Civil Services Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, and more.
Eligibility for UPSC exams varies by specific examination but generally includes Indian nationality, a graduate degree from a recognized university, and age limits that typically range from 21 to 32 years for the Civil Services Examination, with certain relaxations available for reserved categories.
The number of attempts allowed for the Civil Services Examination varies by category: General category candidates can attempt the exam up to 6 times, OBC candidates up to 9 times, and there is no limit for SC/ST candidates up to the age limit.
The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three phases: a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test), the main examination featuring nine papers of essay and descriptive type, and a personality test (interview).
Applications for UPSC exams are submitted online through the UPSC’s official website (https://upsc.gov.in/). Candidates need to fill out the detailed application form (DAF) and pay the application fee, if applicable.
Preparing for UPSC exams is generally intensive and can start as early as in the undergraduate years. Most candidates require at least one year of dedicated preparation before appearing for the exams.
The interview, or personality test, is conducted by a panel of competent and unbiased observers who assess the candidate’s personality traits including clarity of expression, decision-making skills, and mental alertness, among others. The interview is intended to complement the written exam for a holistic assessment of the candidate.
Recommended resources include NCERT textbooks, newspapers for current affairs, standard reference books for each subject of the mains syllabus, and previous years’ exam papers. Many candidates also join coaching centers for guidance and structured preparation.
